Legal Research in Google Scholar

You can use Google Scholar to search for court opinions and articles in legal reviews.

The court opinions available through Google Scholar are:

  • State appellate and supreme court cases dating back to 1950
  • Federal district, appellate, tax, and bankruptcy cases back to 1923
  • United States Supreme Court cases back to 1791

To find legal review articles:

  • Click on the arrow on the right side of the search window to reach the advanced search options.
  • Enter the title of a specific law review or journal in the "return articles published in" window.

 

Searching for Case Law in Google Scholar

In order to use Google Scholar to search for case laws, select "Case Law" on the Scholar homepage. This gives you the option to search all Federal laws or all Illinois laws. You can also choose specific courts (state or federal) by clicking the "Select courts" link. On the search results page, you can also use the sidebar to switch between searches for articles and case laws.
