What are Subject Repositories?

Subject repositories are digital, open access collections of materials in the same discipline(s).  Researchers deposit pre-prints, post-prints and other materials in addition to or in place of traditional publishing methods.

Subject Repositories

The following are some of the more well-known repositories.  All repositories are open access - free to view and download. 

  • arXiv  
      
    Over 500,000 e-prints in physics, mathematics, computer science, quantitative biology, quantitative finance and statistics.
  • PubMed Central  
      
    Biomedical and life sciences journal literature from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). All researchers receiving funding from NIH must deposit their work in PubMed Central within 12 months of publication.
  • BioMed Central  
      
    Hundreds of peer-reviewed journals in science, technology and medicine.
  • Cogprints  
      
    Papers in psychology, neuroscience, linguistics, computer science, philosophy, biology and other disciplines related to cognition.
  • E-LIS : E-prints in Library and Information Science  
      
    Over 9000 items in library and information science.
  • RePEc : Research Papers in Economics  
      
    Over 600,000 materials in economics. Scroll to the IDEAS link to search the repository.
  • PhilSci Archive  
      
    Over 1900 preprints in the philosophy of science.
  • Social Science Research Network (SSRN)  
      
    Over 190,000 free papers in the social sciences, and "a number of specialized research networks in each of the social sciences."
