Census Workers & Your Residence

Census workers and your residence. In May 2020, Census Bureau employees will visit households that have not completed the census to assist you in filling out the census in-person. This person will ask you the same questions that will appear in the online version of the census.

How Can You Verify That Someone Is a Census Taker?

If someone visits your home later this year to collect information for the 2020 Census, check to make sure they have:

  • a valid ID badge with their photograph

  • a U.S. Department of Commerce watermark

  • an expiration date 

  • Census workers may also carry Census Bureau bags and other equipment with the Census Bureau logo

Census takers will introduce themselves as a Census Bureau employee, show their official Department of Commerce ID badge, and explain the purpose of the visit. If you still have questions about their identity, you can call 800-923-8282 to speak with a Census Bureau representative.
