Digital Publishing

Digital publishing is the use of technology-based applications to publish content, including blogs, forums, and websites, for the digital realm, i.e. the Internet. 

Omeka

Omeka is a free, flexible, and open source web-publishing platform for the display of library, museum, archives, and scholarly collections and exhibitions. Its five-minute setup makes launching an online archive or exhibition as easy as launching a blog. Multiple different versions of Omeka exist for different purposes and user groups:

  • Omeka Classic - This open-source option is for individual projects and educators.
  • Omeka S - This version is meant for institutions interested in connecting multiple sites and managing them in one place. 
  • Omeka.net - This paid version of Omeka will host your sites for you.  It is ideal for users who don't have the means to run Omeka Classic on their own servers. There is a range of pricing plans intended for different types of users, such as individuals, teams, and institutions.
  • Omeka Everywhere - This is a suite of tools for creating interactive collection viewing interfaces for mobile devices or in-gallery touchscreen displays. 

WordPress

WordPress.org is free open-source software that aims to democratize publishing by providing easy, user-friendly tools for web design.  Users own their websites and have the freedom and flexibility to make any type of website, blog, or application they choose.  Setup is simple, so you can design your site and publish your work quickly.  

  • WordPress.com is a paid version of WordPress with web hosting included.  There are a range of payment plans, including a free option with limited features.  

Knight Lab

Knight Lab from Northwestern University offers a suite of open-source tools for creating interactive and impactful pieces of journalism. 

  • Juxtapose JS - Compare similar photographs or other types of media so illustrate "then vs now" or "before and after" stories.
  • Scene VR - Create a slideshow of navigable 360 degree images.
  • StoryMap JS - Highlight the locations of a series of events on an interactive map. 
  • Timeline JS - Tell strong chronological narratives using visually rich, interactive timelines.
  • Soundcite JS - Add short inline audio clips to your stories, such as music, spoken word, or natural sounds.
