Google: Google Books

What is Google Books?

You can do a basic search on Google Books, or use the Google Books Advanced Search to refine your search.

Reading and Previewing

Books in Google Books are available to view in a few different ways:

  • Read = You can read the entire book online, for free, or you can download it using the Google Play store. These books are in the public domain, or are available if the publisher gives their permission.
  • Full view = You can read the entire book online, for free. These books are public domain, or their publisher has given Google permission to make them available. If you want to download a copy of the book, you will have to purchase it.
  • Preview = A limited number of pages are available to read online, although you can search the full text.
  • Snippet view = You can search the full text, but you will only be able to see a few lines or sentences surrounding your search term. If your search term appears many times in the text, you will only be able to see three of these previews.
  • No preview = the book has not been digitized. Many of these books are out of print.
