How to Read Research Articles

Tips and Tricks

  1.  Start with the Abstract.  Remember that this is a brief summary of the article's main purpose, scope and conclusions - don't waste time reading an article that is not a match for your topic.
  2.  Skim the Introduction.  The introduction will include more details about the context and background of the article - use this section to further determine if the article is relevant to your topic.
  3. Jump ahead to the Results.  This is where you will find the data, figures, facts, charts and graphs - this is where you should be figuring out hat the author actually found in their research.
  4. If you still think this might be a useful article, look over at the Discussion and Conclusion sections - this will give you more context and understanding of the results.
