Visual Literacy

Evaluate & Analyze

There are a variety of approaches to visual thinking and analysis. Different visual thinking strategies will come more naturally to different people, so start with what feels most natural to you and the way you see. If you are unsure how to get yourself started, try asking yourself the 4Ws. The "4Ws", developed by Todd Finely, are 4 simple questions that you can ask yourself in relation to the image you are evaluating to begin your analysis:

  1. What do I see?
  2. What does it remind me of?
  3. What is the artist's purpose?
  4. So what? Why does it matter?
