Resources Offered by Public Libraries

Chicago Public Library in the Loop. Harold Washington Library Center. Source: Wikimedia Commons, O'Neil, Daniel X.Public libraries offer much the same services as a university library, but the services are available to the entire community. Public libraries offer resources such as:

  • Checking out books, magazines, and newspapers from the library's print collection

  • Interlibrary loans from libraries across the country

  • Databases (example here)

  • Videos, music, and audiobooks

  • eBooks and eMagazines

In addition to sources of information, public libraries also provide a public space where all members of a community can connect and learn. These can include:

  • Meeting spaces

  • Internet access

  • 3-D printing

  • Homework help

  • Games and book clubs

  • Computer and digital literacy instruction
