When editing, you may wish to make changes to specific parts of your video. The easiest way to do this is by using the cutting tool to split the video on your timeline into multiple sections. To select the cutting tool, click on the razor blade icon above the timeline, or simply press B on your keyboard. You’ll know you’re in cutting mode when the razor blade is now red (as seen below), and your cursor becomes a blade when hovering over the footage in your timeline:
As you move your cursor over your timeline, the screen in the upper right corner of the window display the exact frame of video that you’re on:
Move your cursor to the frame which you want to be the beginning of your cut, then click to split the footage. Repeat this process with the frame you want your cut to end on. When finished, your cut should appear as a distinct section on the timeline. Click on the cursor icon to the left of the cutting tool, or press A on the keyboard, to switch back to the normal cursor.
This same process can also be repeated with the audio channel below the video on your timeline. Once you have your footage cut as desired, the cutting tool will “snap” to match cutting the audio in the same spot as the video.
To delete something from your timeline, first make a cut of the section you want to remove. Then, click to highlight it with your cursor and press the Delete key on your keyboard.
One important thing to remember is that the video or audio that corresponds to the section you deleted won’t automatically go away. Instead, it will shift on the timeline. This will desync your video and audio from each other by the same amount of time as the section you deleted.
To keep this from happening, make a cut of the corresponding video/audio before you delete anything. Once both sections are cut, hold Control and click both to highlight them. They should both be selected at once. Now when you press delete, both sections will be deleted, and your timeline will stay in sync.
