Digital Humanities Toolkit

The birth of digital humanities began in 1949 when Father Roberto Busa set out to index every word in the works of St. Thomas Aquinas and along the way enlisted the help of IBM to see if computers could help.

The William Blake Archive is a digital humanities project started in 1994. The archive provides digital reproductions of the various works of William Blake, a prominent Romantic-period poet, artist, and engraver, alongside annotation, commentary and scholarly materials

The Women Writers Project is a research project devoted to early modern women's writing and electronic text encoding. It brings texts by pre-Victorian women writers out of the archive and make them accessible to a wide audience.

The Slave Societies Digital Archive Societies preserves endangered ecclesiastical and secular documents related to Africans and African-descended peoples in slave societies. It includes more than 700,000 digital images drawn close to 2,000 unique volumes dating from the sixteenth through twentieth centuries that document the lives of an estimated four to six million individuals. This collection contains the most extensive serial records for the history of Africans in the Atlantic World, and also includes valuable information about the indigenous, European, and Asian populations who lived alongside them.

This archive is an electronic research and teaching tool that sets out to make Whitman’s vast work easily and conveniently accessible to scholars, students, and general readers, drawing on the resources of libraries and collections from around the United States and around the world.
