Professional Organizations

The Chicago Area Solo Librarians (CASL) group formed in 2001, spearheaded by some solos in Chicago who wanted to meet and network, to commiserate and celebrate, the challenges of life as a solo librarian!

The Council of State Archivists (CoSA) is a national organization comprising the individuals who serve as directors of the principal archival agencies in each state and territorial government.

The Blue Shield is the cultural equivalent of the Red Cross. It is the symbol specified in the 1954 Hague Convention for marking cultural sites to give them protection from attack in the event of armed conflict. It is also the name of an international committee set up in 1996 to work to protect the world's cultural heritage threatened by wars and natural disasters.

The mission of ICA is to promote the preservation and use of archives around the world. In pursuing this mission, ICA works for the protection and enhancement of the memory of the world and to improve communication while respecting cultural diversity.

ICOM is the international organisation of museums and museum professionals which is committed to the conservation, continuation and communication to society of the world's natural and cultural heritage, present and future, tangible and intangible.

ICOMOS is an international non-governmental organization of professionals, dedicated to the conservation of the world's historic monuments and sites.

 

MAC is the nation's largest regional professional association for archivists.

The Midwest Media Archives Alliance was created in order to build an active network of archives, institutions, organizations and individuals who care for audio-visual collections in the Midwest, in order to help preserve, promote and provide access to the region’s dynamic media history.

Founded in 1936, the Society of American Archivists is North America's oldest and largest national archival professional association.

UNESCO has launched the Memory of the World Programme to guard against collective amnesia calling upon the preservation of the valuable archive holdings and library collections all over the world ensuring their wide dissemination.
