How to set up multiple microphones for podcasting in Studio One

Intro:

Are you working on a podcast with multiple people? Is crowding around the same microphone not yielding the best results? Then what you need is Multi Track recording!

Why use Studio One?

While Studio One is designed to be a tool for music making, it also works really well with recording spoken word, and because of the advanced feature set it allows for multiple microphone inputs as well as some fancy audio tools that can really clean up the sound of your podcast. For more about the fancy bells and whistles you can add please see our Studio One New User's Guide (link: coming soon).

Step 0

You will need the following materials which are all available in the recording studio:

  • 2 XLR Microphones

  • 2 Microphone stands

  • 2 XLR Cables

2 Windscreens

You will then plug the cables into the base of the microphone and the other end into the audio box in the two input slots indicated in the picture below:

If you are having any trouble with this step or any others, please feel free to reach out to our recording studio staff and they will be happy to assist.

Step 1: Opening a project

Open Studio One via the shortcut on your desktop:

Open a project in Studio One

Select a template from the list, for ease of use select the template highlighted below for podcasting called "Create Content".

Step 2: Audio Setup

Once you are in your blank project you will be greeted with a screen like this:

There is a lot going on here, but thankfully the template does label what most things do and gives you a short guide through the most important parts.

To make sure your microphones are set up correctly you will want to go to the top bar and press the menu option that says Studio One and select options.

Once the options menu pops up select audio setup and make sure that the audio device is set to AudioBox. What this does is route all audio input and output for Studio One through the AudioBox, which is the device you plugged the microphones into in step 0.

Once you have ensured that the AudioBox is the device in use, just press apply and okay to go back to your project!

Step 3: Track Setup

You will need to make sure that Studio One is separating both of your microphones into distinct audio inputs, as opposed to merging them into a singular stereo input. To do that first you will want to go down to your I/O setup by your faders at the bottom of the page:

Once that is open you just want to make sure input 1 and 2 match what you see in this picture:

Then simply go to your tracks and select the inputs for the tracks like so!

When set up like this the inputs will correspond with the inputs on the AudioBox you plugged your microphones into in step 0. Input 1 is the  input on the left and Input 2 is the one on the right.

Make sure to hit the "Arm to Record" button on each track before hitting the big record button at the bottom and you should be ready to podcast to your hearts content!
