Interlibrary Loan and I-Share at Dominican

This guide provides information on how to request library materials from outside Dominican.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is this slip of paper inside my book?

  • The slip of paper attached to your book will tell you and the lending library if there are any damages, copyright issues, or anything important about the item. Most items are in great condition and should be kept in good condition. The slip protects the lending library in case their item is returned in bad condition and protects you from being blamed for pre-existing issues.
  • There might also be renewal information, the due date, and check out information like barcodes.
  • I-Share books have a white slip; ILL items have a brown slip.
  • Please keep this slip inside your item.

Who can use I-Share and ILL?

  • Only current Dominion students, faculty, and staff members have access to these systems. Alumni and guest users can check with their local public library to request a book through ILL service at that library.

How long does it take for my item to come in?

  • It can take up to two weeks for physical items to arrive, depending on distance from the loaning library.
    • Usually I-Share books arrive within one week, however users should be prepared to wait the entire two weeks.
  • ILL articles are usually available within a week, however it could take longer.

How long do I get to keep ILL materials?

  • The return date for ILL books is set by the lending library and can vary. You can track due dates within your ILL account.
  • ILL articles are available for 30 days or 5 uses, whichever comes first. Articles can be downloaded onto your computer for unlimited access.

Can I renew ILL items?

  • Users may renew I-Share books on their own, through their library accounts.
  • If you would like to extend the loan on your ILL item, contact the Interlibrary Loan Coordinator at interlib@dom.edu
    • Renewals are subject to the approval of the lending library and are evaluated on a case to case basis.

Where do I pick up items? Where do I return them?

  • All physical ILL items will be picked up at the Rebecca Crown Library Circulation Desk on the main floor.
  • Items can be returned to the Circulation Desk.
    • I-Share books may be dropped off in the book return box located outside the lower level entrance of the library.
    • ILL items must be brought back to the desk, inside the library.

These sharing services are huge privileges for DU library users. Loaning libraries will be able to see any user issues and can choose to not let their items travel. Abuse of either system at any stage can result in privileges being revoked indefinitely.
